If you flip the board around you'll activate a second power, which in this case lets him continue to boost even when the meter is empty. Knuckles, for example, can punch the air in front of him (which you trigger by actually punching the air in front of you) that can smash open walls to secret areas. Each character will have a different ability to give them a different feel. Once you have enough rings you will level up, slightly boosting your stats as the race continues. If your character isn't lined up properly, you can also extend your hand to one side of your body, which will in turn extend your character's hand to reach for rings. While zooming around the course it's possible to snag rings by running into them. This propels you forward at high speed, though is limited by a boost meter you can refill by doing tricks.
To get an initial boost of speed you'll need to push off and extend one leg behind you to mimic the motion of gaining speed on a skateboard. When it's time to start the race, you've got to start moving. There was one level on display, and at the start line all the characters are lined up on their boards.
To begin you'll need to select a character – either Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, or one of three other characters – and then pick a hover board tied to that specific character, each of which is tied to a set of statistics. While we weren't able to get any play time, we were able to ask a few questions and watch the game in action.
